International Driving Permit Germany: What Visitors Should Know
Germany drives on the right, and the autobahn network is the country's best-known feature on the road — many stretches have no general speed limit, though advisory speeds, construction zones, and urban sections are strictly enforced. Away from the autobahn, rural roads and town driving follow familiar European conventions.

Environmental zones in cities
Many German cities, including Berlin, Munich, and Cologne, require a Umweltplakette emissions sticker to enter their low-emission zones (Umweltzone). How long can I drive in Germany with my IDP?
Non-EU visitors can typically drive on a foreign license and IDP for up to six months as tourists. Your IDP itself stays valid for the term you purchased (1, 2, or 3 years), but only as long as your home license remains valid too.
Is there really no speed limit on the autobahn?
Many sections have no fixed limit, but urban stretches, construction zones, and areas near interchanges post enforced limits, and an advisory speed of 130 km/h applies where signed. Local rules still apply everywhere your IDP is used.
