Understanding the International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official document that translates your national driver's license into 12 languages — English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Portuguese, German, Italian, Swedish and Greek.

It is recognized in 150+ countries worldwide under the 1949 Geneva Convention and the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. The IDP is not a replacement for your original license — it must always be carried together with your valid national driving license.

  • Your license is not written in the local language

How to apply and required documents

To apply for your IDP, you only need:

  • A clear photo of both sides of your valid driver's license
  • A recent passport-style photo (face clearly visible, plain background)
  • Your mailing address (only if you ordered the physical card)

Delivery

Digital and physical IDP delivery times

Your digital IDP is emailed to you within 5 minutes of approval. You can print it at home or show it on your phone — it is legally valid in both formats.

Physical IDP cards are dispatched within 1-2 business days via tracked international mail. Standard delivery times:

  • Europe: 3-7 business days
  • North America: 5-10 business days
  • Australia & Asia: 7-14 business days
  • Rest of the world: 10-15 business days

You'll receive a tracking number by email once your card is dispatched.

Yes. We ship physical IDP cards to virtually every country in the world. If we can't deliver to your specific location for legal or logistical reasons, we'll refund your order in full.

Yes. You can check your order status anytime using our order tracking page. You'll also receive email updates at each stage: order confirmation, approval, digital delivery, and physical shipping.

If your card doesn't arrive within the expected delivery window, contact our support team at support@idpdrive.org. We'll investigate with the courier and, if confirmed lost, send you a free replacement.

Countries & Validity

Where the IDP is accepted and for how long

Our IDP is valid in 150+ countries worldwide — all Geneva and Vienna Convention signatories. This covers virtually all of Europe, most of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania.

Yes, the IDP is accepted in all three:

  • Australia: Foreign visitors can drive with their IDP + original license for up to 3 months per state
  • United States: All 50 states accept the IDP alongside your original license
  • United Kingdom: Foreign visitors can drive up to 12 months with an IDP + original license

A few countries do not accept the standard IDP:

  • China (mainland): requires a temporary Chinese license
  • Japan: requires a separate JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) translation
  • North Korea & Somalia: travel not recommended

If you're traveling to Japan, contact us — we can guide you through the JAF process.

We offer IDPs valid for 1 year, 2 years, or 3 years. Your IDP is only valid as long as your original driver's license remains valid — if your home license expires, your IDP expires too.

Yes, always. The IDP is a translation, not a replacement. You must carry both your IDP and your original national driver's license at all times when driving abroad. Authorities and rental companies may ask for both.

  • Your IDP has not yet been issued or delivered
  • Your application was rejected for reasons not caused by you
  • You request the refund within 14 days of your order

Refunds are not available once a valid IDP has been issued and delivered.

If your IDP is refused anywhere in the world due to any error on our part, we refund you in full. Please contact us within 14 days of the incident with evidence (photo of the refusal notice, police report, etc.) at support@idpdrive.org.

Yes, if your IDP has not yet been issued. Email us immediately at support@idpdrive.org with your order number and we'll cancel and refund your order. Once the IDP is issued, cancellation is no longer possible.
